Filming

These are a few pictures that we took whilst filming; it shows us setting up our equipment and props in preparation to film. The desaturated skies are noticeable here, showing how unpredictable the weather was whilst filming - this caused problems for our group as it often put us of schedule.

Fonts

From looking at the fonts on the covers of existing thrillers, we have found that sans serif fonts work most effectively and so would it would be ideal to be using it on the titles in our thriller opening.

Below are some of the fonts that we came across.

What Genre?

In order to come up with a storyline, we researched the different thriller sub-genres which has in fact lead us to an idea.

Lesson Work

Here is Liam, who is in the process of drawing out our story board. This will be our guide to filming as it shows us what shots go where and the kind of shots that need to be used. Of course there is always the possibility that we find that something doesn't work so well off of the paper but we can easily experiment to find something fitting.

Story Line: Draft

The first building block of our film was of course to come up with a story line. Here you can see the first draft of our idea which we were quite pleased with and are happy to work with. |Soon enough, this will be developed into a structured piece which will stem into a detailed storyboard.

First Draft

This is the first draft of the narration that will be a component of our thriller opening. Our decision to include a narration in our piece came from the fact that we though it would act as an effective knowledge gap which leaves space for the audience to think about what might occur in the following events. This piece was written by Emma Laird.

Applying Uses and Gratifications

After looking at the uses and gratifications theory which suggests why people use the media, we need to apply it to our own film to see how it can be appreciated by a wider audience.

Diversion (escapism)
Our film, 'Marshlands' would act as a form of escapism for our audience as it surfaces emotions that they would not generally feel in every day life. Although our film possesses feelings of terror and realism, they will not be brought to life in a way that it will be taken seriously to the extent that the audience will relate it to the real world.

Personal Identity
It is questionless that our audience will be able to empathise/relate with at least one of the characters in the film at one point or another as there is a strong mixture of personalities and characteristics within the group.

Surveillance (information)
As our film is in every way fictional with it's primary function being to entertain, it would not be suitable to say that this piece would be could be used as an educational resource.

Personal Relationships (social interaction)
It is part of our intentions that this film could be watched by a number of people at one given time/seating either for casual home entertainment or at a social event. Elements of the thriller should spike mutual talking points such as their interpretations of how the characters are coping with the situation.

Entertainment
The primary role of this piece is to entertain a target audience by arousing certain emotions that are not generally shown through everyday life. This film allows the viewer to explore features of their mind, that would not generally be accepted in everyday society, through film.

Uses and Gratifications Theory

In 1974, Blumler and Katz devised at theory which suggest how and why people use different forms of media. They suggested the following reasons;

- Diversion (escapism); this part of the theory suggests that people use media to escape from the daily grind. This could be as they're settling down after a hard day at work or after watershed when the children have gone to bed.

- Personal Identity; this suggests that people use the media to create their own identity from characters/celebrities and learning behaviour and values.

- Entertainment; this explains that people use the media as a means of enjoyment, relaxation and emotional release, purely for the 'fun' of the experience.

- Personal Relationships (social interaction); this part of the theory suggests that people use the media as a means of social interaction in place of a real life interaction, for example, substituting soap operas for family life.

- Surveillance (information); this suggests that people use the media to gain information and knowledge on a certain topic.

Thriller Storyline

This is the final storyline of our film idea. Since the last draft, we have developed our characters and have found a location in which we shall film. The next step is to create a storyboard with camera shots and movements.

Creating Titles

We were having a go at creating titles using Adobe Premier Pro using different after effects to see what we could come up with. This is just one of the titles that we created, however, we have decided not to use it because it does not fit in with the genre of a thriller as the smoke would most likely be associated with an action film.

Liam Gilliver was responsible for creating this title.
